Domaine Joël DELAUNAY
Touraine is not the richest of winegrowing regions in France. In fact, many estates still barely carve out a living with polyculture rather than grape growing. But Joel represent the fifth generation of Delaunay winemakers in the Touraine region. He took over the Domaine from his father in 1965, and bottled the estate's first wine in 1970. Over the years the size of the estate has grown to 21 hectares in vines. Touraine remains largely unknown and is a hot-bed for hungry young winemakers doing everything, right and wrong, to try and carve out what they consider to be their rightful place on the market. But there is no flash here, just sound craft. This Sauvignon Blanc is fermented in stainless stell tanks. After fermentation the wine is racked and placed back in the tank with the lees for five to eight months to add just a touch of fat and absolutely textbook aromatics. Paul Wasserman
