Domaine François MIKULSKI

A frustrating position for a winemaker, to feel that you have plateaued in your craft. This was the sentiment of François in the late 90's until something just "clicked" in the 2000 vintage. It was not one particular thing but a certain maturity.
I personally believe that winemakers find the courage not to make the wine, but let the wine make itself. They start as very technical winemakers, tweaking, modifying at the first sign the wine has strayed from it's intended course. Then, with the experience of a number of vintages they realize that they can't possibly have controled every factor taking place in each cuvee, although the wine turned out just fine. What would have happened if they had done less?

When the appellation system was created, the village of Meursault thought people would not give due credit to their red wines considering the village was primarily known for it's whites. They asked of Volnay to borrow their identity for the pinot noir vineyards bordering that village. Volnay agreed and as such it's very rare to have red Meursault, but you can find the 1er cru Caillerets here. And it is astonishing, a curiosity considering its unexpected strength, which would be more appropriate in Pommard. Other must haves are the 1er Cru Goutte d'Or, an appellation that displays the richest of what the village has to offer, buttery, nutty characteristics. And the 1er Cru Poruzots, an appellation that often falls under the radar but François does a fine job with a lovely display of minerality on top of all the desirable Meursault aspects.
